Aging eyebrows, permanent makeup & cosmetic surgery
Placement of the eyebrow above the eye requires as much planning as the shape of the eyebrows. There is typically one eye's height between the eye and brow. If you have a lot of eyebrow hairs, you have to work with what you've got, or remove them by temporary (plucking/waxing) or permanent (laser/electrolysis) methods. Click on thumbnail images.
Gravity & aging cause the forehead tissue to sag downward, dropping the eyebrows from their youthful position to a lower position above the eye. Although some young people have low eyebrows, it is generally perceived as an aged appearance. It can also make you look tired, sad, or mad.
Planning for future cosmetic surgery - specifically upper facelift - should also be a consideration. Upper facelift is also referred to as a browlift or forehead lift. Lower facelift and eyelid surgery will not affect your eyebrows. There are a few different techniques a plastic surgeon can use to do browlifts. Two basic approaches are: A) Incision above the brow - raises the brows only, not the entire forehead. B) Incision or tacking up in the hairline - raises the entire forehead including the eyebrows. A less invasive brow lifting technique for minimal sagging is the Endotine Lift.
Depending on amount and distribution of pulling up on the forehead skin, eyebrow shape (regardless of whether it is natural or tattooed) can become distorted. Eyebrows that are already in a high position may become unnaturally high after an upper face lift. This does not mean you should not get permanent makeup / cosmetic tattoo on your eyebrows in case you want a forehead lift some day. What do people with natural brows do - remove them? Of course not. Just stay on the conservative side by not placing them too high and not over exaggerating the arch. In cases like the YIPES high brows example (the untattooed naturally high eyebrows that look unnaturally high after a forehead lift), removing and redrawing the brows would be beneficial.
Permanent makeup will last a number of years, but eventually fades off like disappearing ink. So, if you will not need an upper facelift in the next few years, chances are it will be faded off by the time you do. Any residual color could be removed. Laser and other removal techniques continue to improve as the popularity of tattooing increases. However, if there is noticeable scarring from the tattooed area, the skin would need some type of resurfacing or surgically excise the area. If you notice raised scarring in the tattooed brow, you should look into the scar reducing products and treatments. Not many people have hypertrophic scarring problems, but a couple of people who had a minimal amount of raised scarring liked it that way. They said it made the brow look more 3D and real.
There are many types of facelifts. Specific areas can be lifted. A never ending addition of modified techniques accompanied by a new name for each new modification make the choices pretty confusing. Most of the new techniques involve smaller incisions and quicker recovery times. These include endoscopic facelift, mini-lift, weekend facelift, gentle lift, quick lift, lifestyle lift, surface pointe lifts, and more. Which technique is chosen may depend on the amount of sagging. A face with minimal sagging would do well with any of the less invasive procedures. A face with a maximum amount of sagging needs the excess removed.
